With the success of its RDNA 4 GPUs, AMD is looking to add a third entrant to the lineup, with a cut-down version that competes against the likes of NVIDIA’s RTX 5070, but at a better price-to-performance ratio.
The Sub-$500 RX 9070 GRE Could Join the RDNA 4 Lineup as a Stripped-Down Version of the Base RX 9070
In Asian markets, especially China, the RDNA 4 has been a huge success. AMD’s CEO, Lisa Su, shared that first-week sales this year were 10 times higher than previous generations. This surge in demand has led to reports of an RX 9070 shortage in the region. Because of this, rumors point to the fact that AMD will release a “Radeon RX 9070 GRE” in the Asia-Pacific region later this quarter.
This variant will be a stripped-down variant of the existing lineup, which includes the RX 9070 ($549) and the RX 9070 XT ($599), both of which are 16GB variants, based on the Navi 48 GPU core. The “GRE” will be a cut-down version of this die, and competing against the RTX 5070, will come with a 12GB GDDR6 VRAM, and a 192-bit memory bus.
While the exact specifications don’t exactly put the GRE higher up the charts in raw performance, the idea is to undercut the competition in pricing. Hence, several publications have stated that AMD may be looking at an MSRP in the $449 to $499 ballpark.
It’s also speculated that the card may come to markets outside China. The “GRE” moniker initially stood for the “Golden Rabbit Edition,” in line with the Chinese zodiac, but since the RX 6750 GRE and RX 7900 GRE were pushed to global markets, it was changed to a much more generic-sounding “Great Radeon Edition.“
At the moment, the news is purely based on rumored information, so it’s advised to take this with a grain of salt. These rumors have also mentioned that the card may come before the release of AMD’s budget RX 9060 series, which is expected to be later this quarter.
