While most companies phase out older devices within five to ten years, Sony has just released an update for the PS3—19 years after its launch.
The update comes as a surprise to many, but it doesn’t add much. It’s merely a minor one, bringing small system performance improvements and renewed encryption keys for the Blu-ray disc player to run… well, Blu-ray.

As Sony states, “to play Blu-ray discs, your PS3 system needs a renewed Blu-ray player encryption key,” hence with the older ones expiring, the company has pushed newer ones via an update. Keep in mind though that you must have at least 200MB on your disk to install this version 4.92 update.
The PS3 was released in scattered markets in 2006, followed by a full launch the very next year, in 2007. However, the console was phased out of production around eight years ago, in 2017. Its last update, also a minor one, was released in February 2024.
This is all we know for now, but rest assured that we will keep you updated as new information becomes available.
